Breskens is a wonderful town with a long history. It was founded in 1510. Originally it used to be a farmers village but it's been known for decades as a fisherman's town. The fishery is mainly responsible for the nautical character of the town. Most characteristic is the fishing port, but you will find find maritime themes along the Spuiplein square and promenade, as well as on the menu's of many restaurants including our own, where fresh fish from our local fisherman's is served.
A special place to be introduced to the history of our fishing culture is the Fishery Museum. You can get a guided tour on a fishing boat but you can also explore the sea on a boat trip or try your luck on a fishing trip on the North sea.
For those who like to see more maritime wildlife, there's a see-the-seals-trip to the sandbanks nearby. If you bring your binoculars you can also take a walk on the dike and see the wild seals from the dike at 'Nummer Een'.
In and around Breskens you can find many beautiful and clean beaches where there still is al lot of space to enjoy the sunshine or take a quit walk along the shores.
The walking and biking routes along the dunes, throughout the nature reserves, and through the characteristic ancient villages are worthy to everybody who likes to explore in the open air.
Nature reserves like Zwin and Braakman fantastically show the influent of the tides on the development of flora and fauna. Little villages like Groede and Sint Anna ter Muiden are really worth a tour. Bicycles can be rented at our hotel.
If you like to go shopping you certainly will love the shopping area in the rustic town Sluis and the city of Vlissingen is only a boat trip away.
For the children there are many playgrounds and fun parks in the area, several of them also have an indoor facility. Here, your children can play as much as they like while you can relax on a terrace or pick nick area. Some examples are De Afslag in Breskens, 't Krekeltje in Eede, and Toversluis in Sluis. A wonderful outdoor playground that has free entrance is Groede Podium in Groede.
But in Breskens itself, there are always a lot of activities. Every now and then there are season markets and tourist markets in the town centre. There will be a fair to open the summer season in early July and at the beginning of August there is always the 3-days Fishery Festival. Throughout the year several other events will be organised.
Last but not least there is the Belgian West-Vlaanderen, which is very suitable for a day trip. There are beautiful ancient cities like Brugge and Gent, friendly beach towns like Knokke and Blankenberge. And larger fun parks like Boudewijn Seapark in Brugge, Sealife in Blankenberge and Plopsaland in De Panne.
We wish you a wonderful stay in our hotel!
